a strong foundation
history
growth
The University’s original role in the development of the research park was to encourage research organizations to locate in the park, and to advise on the suitability of proposed tenants, research programs, and activities. The University also encouraged interaction between the tenants and its own research personnel and academic departments.
By 1968 the University Research Park was home to The Institute of Sedimentary and Petroleum Geology, the core house of the Alberta Government Oil and Gas Conservation Board, and the research laboratory of Canadian Stratigraphic Services Limited. The Vocational Rehabilitation Research Institute — jointly funded by the Provincial Government of Alberta, the Canadian Mental Health Association and the Calgary Active 20/30 Club — was under construction.
shifting focus
In 2020 the Government of Alberta transferred ownership of the park to the University outlining the University’s intention to reinvent the research park into Calgary’s innovation hub for research and entrepreneurial thinking.
That same year University of Calgary Properties Group was announced to lead the Master Plan for the management and development of the park, which later rebranded to University Innovation Quarter.
