About the UIQ Master Plan

2308 x 900 (16/7)

UIQ’s process began with a Master Plan to define a clear vision for the district: how the land, streets, infrastructure, transportation, open spaces, buildings, and sustainability priorities should come together over time.

Community engagement shaped the UIQ Master Plan and helped clarify UIQ’s unique role as a complete innovation district connected to UCalgary, surrounding communities, and Calgary’s research and entrepreneurial strengths.

FAQs

Why is UIQ being redeveloped?

The existing area has significant capacity for growth, connectivity, and densification. Redevelopment will help UIQ better support a rich ecosystem of research, industry, innovation, and entrepreneurial activity.

What is the current state of development?

We are currently in the formal approvals stage. University of Calgary Properties Group (UCPG) has submitted a Land Use Application (reference number: LOC2023-0125), that is currently under city review to realize a new development vision for this site. The active Outline Plan and Land Use Redesignation application covers 31 hectares over 15 legal parcels, with approval anticipated in 2026. Future development is expected to proceed in phases over 10 to 20 years, depending on market and economic conditions.

Will the existing pond or park be retained?

The pond and park located in the northwest corner of UIQ by 40th Avenue NW is a public city park owned and operated by the City of Calgary. There are no plans to remove this feature at this time.
